SUMMARY:Golden Fang: Live in Concert
DESCRIPTION:Experience the musical facet of Teo Treloar’s creative practice as part of the band Golden Fang playing live in the Gallery. \nGolden Fang is a melodic post-indie guitar band based across Sydney and Wollongong. Their sixth and most recent album\, Small Worlds\, featuring cover art by Treloar\, is an exploration of the textures and qualities of\, as the name suggests\, small worlds – our immediate relationships\, our everyday lives\, small daily joys and struggles. \nAs Simon Kirk writes in Sun 13: \n“Over their sixth album reign\, Golden Fang have been earnest masters of finding magic in the mundane. The four-piece\, singer/guitarist\, Carl Redfern\, guitarist Teo Treloar\, bassist Justin Tauber and percussionist Joe Parkin\, have spent the last decade shaping the imaginations for the devoted few with a brand of nostalgia that has an uncanny knack of stirring up the embers. Those memories that somehow resurface after years buried in the deepest parts of your mind.” \nGolden Fang will be supported by Donna Amini. Donna Amini is perhaps an unlikely rock musician. Her Persian heritage coupled with her eclectic listening taste; including rock\, folk\, blues\, jazz and experimental music contributes to her original sound and unique outlook on music. Donna’s new songs display the range of her skill in crafting melodies around raw electric guitar sounds\, generating cutting sonic spaces as well as gentle lulling spirituals; all delivered with seasoned conviction. \nBook your spot today via Eventbrite. \n\n\n\n  \n\nAbout this event\nSuitable for: Everyone \nCost: By donation

SUMMARY:A Book Club on Kafka's 'The Metamorphosis'
DESCRIPTION:Imagine you wake one day\, and you are a giant cockroach. What next? \nJoin Teo Treloar in a discussion of one of Franz Kafka’s best-known novella’s The Metamorphosis. \nFor Treloar\, existentialist literary texts from writers such as Kafka have deeply influenced his work. As he says: “I really leant into that idea of this kind of maze-like world often reflected in existential literature – worlds that do not surprise but are illogical. In my work you can’t trust the narrator or gauge whether this thing is happening\, or whether it’s all a psychological dreamlike process.” \nThis book club offers the chance to immerse deeper into the worlds of both Kafka and Treloar and gain further insight into A Void A Maze. \nWe recommend that you read the text before the discussion. \nBook your free spot via Eventbrite. \n\n\n\n  \n\nAbout this event\nSuitable for: Everyone \nCost: Free

SUMMARY:Panel Talk on Masculinities
DESCRIPTION:What is masculinity and how does our shape lives? Join us for a panel talk that explores masculinities in the every day. \nIn Teo Treloar’s work male-coded figures in crisp white shirts and ties pull levers and populate mazes in a surreal dystopia of finely rendered grey space\, reminiscent of the mundanity of governance and labour in the information economy. They are the “middle-men of history” – both operating the system they are in and being trapped by it. \nInspired by the work of Teo Treloar in A Void A Maze and in keeping with Pride month\, this panel brings together the artist Teo Treloar and local panellists to discuss the definitions and roles of masculinity in our immediate contexts. \nAs Dr Raewyn Connell writes: \n“To speak of masculinities is to speak about gender relations. Masculinities are not equivalent to men; they concern the position of men in a gender order. They can be defined as the patterns of practice by which people (both men and women\, though predominantly men) engage that position.” \nIn this talk\, we begin to map the patterns of masculinity in its obvious and covert manifestations to understand its everyday effect especially in the ways it remains invisible (or not) and shapes systems of labour and bureaucracy. \nBook your free spot via Eventbrite. \n\n\n\n  \n\nAbout this event\nSuitable for: Everyone \nCost: Free

SUMMARY:Rise and Fall Finissage with a screening of Two Bob Mermaid
DESCRIPTION:See off Karla Dickens: Rise and Fall with a celebratory afternoon at the gallery. \nAs part of the festivities\, we will be screening Two Bob Mermaid (1996) by Darlene Johnson at 2pm. \nAs Romaine Moreton writes (for the National Film and Sound Archive): \nTwo Bob Mermaid is the directorial debut of Darlene Johnson. It is the story of Koorine (Carrie Prosser)\, a fair skinned Indigenous girl who ‘passes’ – allowing people to think you are white. Koorine dreams of becoming a famous swimmer. The title of the film refers to Esther William’s film Million Dollar Mermaid\, a ‘two bob’ mermaid creating a correlation between class and dreams. In order to achieve her dream Koorine lets the townspeople think that she is white so that she can gain access to the local swimming pool from which Aboriginal peoples are banned. \nTwo Bob Mermaid is visually stunning\, and Johnson manages to tell quite a political story through the eyes of a child\, whose innocent tendency to dream is restricted by the political restrictions imposed upon Aboriginal people during the period the film is set (1950s). The banning from swimming pools was a reality for Indigenous people up until racism was outlawed in Australia. Dr Charles Perkins during the Freedom Rides of 1967 encouraged Indigenous people to fight the bans. Indigenous peoples were made citizens of this country after the 1967 referendum. \nRegister your free spot via Eventbrite. \n\n\n\n  \n\nAbout this event\nCost: Free

SUMMARY:Fridge Magnet Making with Sister GlitterNullius
DESCRIPTION:Repent! And make frij magnets as penance for your plastic sins with Sister GlitterNullius. \nJoin Sister GlitterNullius for the finissage weekend of Karla Dickens’ Rise and Fall as she guides us in a frij-magnet making workshop. We will reflect on ideas about changing social identities\, community cohesion\, social inclusion/exclusion\, temporality\, social mobility and Belonging and leave with frij magnets as mementos. \nWollongong was once a steel industry town but now has a burgeoning university and art community. This project acknowledges the Dharawal Nation and Country as the enduring custodians of the area and how the participants view and feel about their relationships with the local Aboriginal community. \nThe workshop will explore irony\, tensions and successes after the arrival of and resettlement/colonisation by new ‘residents’\, redefining the community and its shifting social identity. Asking\, what can we all do to improve our relationships and address climate crises at the same time. \nMaterials provided. Feel free to Bring Your Own small items such as small toys\, pieces of fabric\, pegs and magazine images or personal photographs for attaching to fridge magnets that reflect your own history and connections with the Wollongong region. \nBookings are essential via Eventbrite. \nAbout Sister GlitterNullius\nSister GlitterNullius grapples with an array of internal and external pressures such as\, our use of plastics and their impact on the environment\, while pushing and dragging a large dolls house on wheels. Sister GlitterNullius\, a nun of the Anthropocene\, chaperones the doll’s house through humour\, irony\, and slightly unsettling sarcasm. As she struggles to find somewhere to ‘set up house’\, she introduces questions of what it means to call somewhere\, ‘home’\, concepts of a ‘home-town’ and the irony of ‘resettlement’ from an Indigenous perspective. \nAs one of the Sisters of Perpetual Plastix\, Sister GlitterNullius was created by Juundaal Strang-Yettica (Bundjalung-Kannakan\, living on Dharawal Country) for Plastic-free Biennale by Lucas Ihlein & Kim Williams\, 2020\, as part of NIRIN\, Sydney Biennale 2020. Key strengths of my character\, lay within her identity fragility\, her hypocrisy and her chronically\, dangerous enmeshment with all aspects of the 21st Century. Sister GlitterNullius is imprisoned by her love-hate relationship with plastic and all things\, consumerist\, capitalist\, catholic and colonisation. \n\n\n\n  \n\nAbout this event\nCost: Pay as you can (suggested $40). Free Mob Tix available.

DESCRIPTION:Inspired by the mermaids in Wollongong Art Gallery’s current exhibition\, Karla Dickens: Rise and Fall\, this workshop engages with unnatural treasures collected and saved from polluting the natural environment. \nMake exquisite wearable art with beach debris and plastic bags with local artist\, Mel Young. Mel will lead a workshop on making jewellery from plastics found on the beach\, in the ocean and saved from landfill. \nYou will learn a range of simple jewellery making techniques in including simple stitching\, stringing and cordage which are then applied to your gathered materials to create beautiful wearable objects for the body. The processes of hand-making cordage (or string) using a hand-twisting technique is a deceptively simple process with infinite possibilities! Cordage can be used in combination with found materials to make jewellery such as a necklaces\, bracelets\, earrings or brooches. \nBring your own washed plastic beach debris\, clean recycled plastics and clean plastic bags; jewellery findings and tools will be provided. Experience is not required for this workshop\, just your enthusiasm! \nBookings are essential via Eventbrite. \nAbout Melinda Young \nMelinda Young lives and works on Dharawal Country. Her research-based practice spans jewellery and intimately scaled textiles reflecting on experiences of being in and understanding place\, underpinned by the complexities of place-based making in contemporary Australia. She is interested in materiality – the traces of human and non-human interactions left behind on the body and the land. \nExhibiting extensively in Australia and internationally since 1997\, her work is held in public collections and included in numerous publications. Melinda has spent the past 25 years working within the contemporary craft and design field as an educator\, curator\, gallery manager and writer. She has a Master of Visual Arts from Sydney College of the Arts and is currently undertaking a cross-disciplinary PhD in Human Geography and Creative Arts at the University of Wollongong. \n\n\n\n  \n\nAbout this event\nCost: $40 – $70
